At least twelve people have been feared dead following a tragic road accident that occurred on the night of April 7, 2025, at around 9:30 p.m. along the Tororo–Iganga highway at Lwaba Village in Kapyanga Sub-county, Bugiri Municipality.

The fatal crash involved a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UBC 772A headed towards Tororo, a trailer registration number KMB 157C coming from the same destination, and a boda boda carrying two passengers.

According to Bakaali Kirya, a local leader and eyewitness, the accident was caused by the taxi driver who attempted to overtake a sugarcane truck, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming trailer.

“The taxi tried to overtake a sugarcane truck and collided with the trailer that was coming from the opposite direction. In trying to avoid the collision, the trailer overturned and its head crushed the taxi,” Kirya told authorities.

He added that residents and first responders had to cut through the wreckage of the taxi to retrieve the victims.

“At first, we removed six dead bodies from the taxi. Others were taken to Bugiri Hospital mortuary,” he said.

East Busoga police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the incident stating that the police had launched a full investigation.

“Today, Bugiri Police Station received a report of a fatal accident involving the deaths of many people. We are working closely with hospital authorities to ensure that all the bodies are identified and handed over to their respective relatives,” Kafayo stated.

The identities of the victims had not been released by press time, but police confirmed that postmortems were ongoing at Bugiri Hospital.

Seven survivors, some in critical condition, were rushed to medical facilities for emergency treatment.

The tragic accident has once again raised concerns over reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations on Uganda’s highways.
