More than ten people have been reported dead, while at least fifty-seven others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving seven automobiles on a Northwest Turkish motorway in Turkey.
This tragedy occurred on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, on the Northern Marmara Highway in Sakarya province, around 150 kilometres (93 miles) from Istanbul, as a result of heavy fog and poor visibility.
According to Sakarya Province Governor, Yasar Karadeniz, there’s a possibility that the multi-car collision started when a car struck a truck because of poor visibility from the thick fog, which led to further crashes in the rear.
Karadeniz said that the investigators suspect that some of the passengers may have perished after being struck by other cars while attempting to escape from their cars for safety.
He further stated that the collision involved at least three intercity buses, adding that seven of the injured were still in critical condition.
Karadeniz said that driver error is the most frequent reason for multiple vehicle collisions. One negligent or careless driver can start a chain of events that eventually impacts multiple drivers.
He added that driver inattention or distraction is one type of negligence that can result in a chain reaction accident; therefore, this may have been the cause of the large-scale car crash on the Northern Marmara Highway in Sakarya province, Istanbul.
